Course details

Complete your Asbestos Awareness training online, at your own pace and without leaving your workplace.

This is a non-accredited course providing essential knowledge about asbestos, its types, locations and health risks. It is designed for tradespeople, construction workers and others who may encounter asbestos in the course of their work and need to know how to identify it and avoid disturbing it. Workers who are required to remove asbestos must complete an accredited removal course — this awareness course does not qualify anyone to remove asbestos.

Course name

Asbestos Awareness Online Course

Cost

$75 per person

Duration

Approximately 2.5 hours (self-paced, online)

Target audience

This course suits any worker whose role may bring them into contact with asbestos-containing materials in buildings, structures or plant. Asbestos was widely used in Australian construction until the late 1980s, and many older buildings still contain it. Any worker entering, renovating or maintaining these structures should understand the risks.

It is well suited to both workers new to asbestos awareness obligations and those completing a refresher on current legislation and safe work requirements.

This course is suitable for:

  • Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, plasterers, painters and gas fitters
  • Workers who enter ceiling cavities, including insulation installers, pest control operators and air-conditioning technicians
  • Demolition, renovation and maintenance workers
  • Solar panel installers and roofing workers
  • Floor finishers and tilers
  • Emergency services workers
  • Building and construction workers across all trades

Pathways

Asbestos Awareness is the essential starting point for workers who may encounter asbestos. If your role requires you to actually remove asbestos-containing materials, you will need to complete an accredited removal course:

  • Remove Non-Friable Asbestos (CPCCDE3028): The first step in the licensed removal pathway. A one-day accredited course for workers required to remove non-friable (Class B) asbestos-containing materials
  • Remove Friable Asbestos (CPCCDE3029): The advanced removal course for workers required to remove friable (Class A) asbestos-containing materials. Requires CPCCDE3028 as a prerequisite
  • Work Health and Safety qualifications: For those pursuing formal credentials in workplace safety and hazard management

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This is a non-accredited awareness course. Participants who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion.

No. This awareness course does not qualify you to remove asbestos. To remove non-friable asbestos you must complete the accredited CPCCDE3028 course. To remove friable asbestos you must also hold CPCCDE3029. Both courses are available through Link Resources.

Any worker who may encounter asbestos-containing materials in the course of their work should complete asbestos awareness training. This is particularly relevant for tradespeople, construction and maintenance workers, and anyone working in or on buildings constructed before 1990.

Non-friable asbestos is bound in a solid matrix (such as cement sheeting) and is less likely to release fibres when undisturbed. Friable asbestos is loose or can be easily crumbled, making it more hazardous because fibres are more readily released into the air. Different licences are required to remove each type.

The course takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. It is self-paced, so you can spread this across your own schedule if needed.
